Road Scholar Online Lecture: Bastille Day — The Spark of Revolution

Road Scholar Online Lecture: Bastille Day — The Spark of Revolution Online

Enroll for a free one-hour online lecture and Q&A on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11 a.m. to learn about the true significance of Bastille Day provided by the Road Scholar program.

Often called "Bastille Day" in English, July 14th marks a turning point in French history — but the French don’t actually use this name. This free lecture explores the true significance of La fête nationale française, from the storming of the Bastille in 1789 to its role in shaping modern France. Join Nettah Yoeli-Rimmer to examine how the day evolved from revolutionary upheaval to an official national holiday, the debates over its meaning and how it is celebrated in France today. Through this, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of French national identity and the lasting legacy of the Revolution.

This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event.
